First, a classification of the term eye laser: For the average person, eye laser is an overall term and stands for the permanent removal of glasses or contact lenses. As an ophthalmologist, several universes of different laser technologies with applications in the areas of eye diagnostics, eye therapy, eye surgery and, of course, as a subgroup here cosmetic “eye laser treatment” come together in this topic.
So if we speak of a treatment to make visual aids obsolete, we are talking about visual defects. Again, the common perception is that any visual defect only needs to be “lasered” in order to get rid of the glasses – but this is not always the case.
Prerequisites for laser treatment
The best prerequisites are those who achieve 100% with whatever visual aid per eye. If we consider only this group, it makes sense only if there is a long-standing suffering and the risks of surgical treatment are clear.
So, strictly speaking, there is no “qualification” for an elective cosmetic surgical procedure. The following visual defects are suitable for treatment:
- Nearsightedness (myopia)
- Farsightedness (hyperopia)
- Astigmatism
- Presbyopia
Regardless of whether one or a combination of the above-mentioned visual imperfections are present, today there is a surgical method for almost everything. The laser (excimer laser) is the most commonly used, although other methods can also help you to live without glasses. Before each treatment we conduct a consultation, where we explain the options and risks. We also provide patients with a detailed and individually tailored solution.
Suitable age for treatment
The age for suitability is not set in stone, but in general it is assumed that the eyes are fully grown from the age of 22. Of course, the patient’s maturity is a basic requirement for surgery.
