What to expect at your consultation hour with the ophthalmologist

During a consultation, individual eye problems can be discussed and the appropriate treatment option can be selected. A visit to the eye doctor can also help prevent eye disease or slow its progression.

Duration of a consultation

During an initial consultation with an ophthalmologist, the first step is to discuss the patient’s medical history. During this consultation, the doctor will ask you about any previous illnesses, medications you are taking and any complaints you may have. Your lifestyle habits, such as smoking or regular computer work, can also provide important information. This is followed by a thorough eye examination, including an eye test. This will determine whether you need a visual aid and what strength it should have. In addition, intraocular pressure and the fundus of the eye are also examined. If abnormalities are found, further examinations such as a visual field test or an OCT examination may need to be performed.

At the end of the consultation, the ophthalmologist will discuss the results and possible treatment options with you. If you need a visual aid, the doctor can recommend different options such as glasses, contact lenses or even laser treatment.

Overall, an initial consultation with the ophthalmologist usually takes about 30-60 minutes, depending on the extent of the examinations and medical history. However, it is advisable to allow enough time for the consultation and examinations to get the most accurate diagnosis possible.

Diagnosis and treatment options

After the examinations at the ophthalmologist’s office, the results are discussed at the end of the consultation hour. During this process, the doctor will explain the diagnosis and whether or not treatment is necessary. If treatment is necessary, various options will be presented and the advantages and disadvantages explained. These include eye drops, medication or surgical measures. Here, the ophthalmologist will individually address your needs and the condition of your eyes and recommend the best solution.

It is important to discuss all questions and concerns openly and to have a clear idea of what to expect. Depending on the type and extent of treatment, another session may be necessary to discuss further details and clarify any questions.

How often you should see an eye doctor depends on several factors, including your age, health and family history. In general, it is recommended that adults have an eye exam every two years. For children and older people, this should be more often.
